Food portions, nutrition info, targeted only to women

Ever notice that the Nutrition Facts box on foods is targeted soley to
women? It gives you the % RDA (Recommended Daily Allowance) of
nutrients for people on 2,000 calorie diets--women. On less than 5% of
labels will you also find info for people whose calorie intake is
2,500. Both are less than what a normal man eats. So the percentage
you're getting of vital nutrients, such as protein, is WRONG for you
if you're a man.
The Nutrition Facts box also gives the % RDA, for women, of Iron and
Calcium. No special mention of nutrients for men--in fact, there have
been studies tying iron in the diet to prostate cancer, but the US
government still mandates iron-enriched flour for bread. I've asked
researchers in the FDA why more studies haven't been done on iron and
men, and they (she, actually), said they weren't concerned about the
connection. So we're going backwards when it comes to men.
And if you look in cookbooks these days, and I mean just about all of
them, you're going to find all portion sizes calculated for women
only. Went through four such at B&N as well as one from our local
grocery store, and they all listed dishes with one pound of meat as
serving four. Sorry gals, but that's asinine. If I want a quarter
pounder and nothing else, I'll go to McDonalds. Average calorie count
of the dinner entrees was 200-350, hardly even suitable for women.
