I guess you missed my comment about the marketplace and its pricing being
inherently discriminatory in a great many ways. Take airline seats for
example. This past spring I paid full price for a seat I booked two days
before. The man sitting next to me got his seat at half price because he
booked two weeks earlier. Same flight, same distance, same time, one seat
full price, the seat next to that half price on the very same airplane.
That man got a deal I didn't get. I got discriminated against and punished
for booking my flight closer to the date of departure than that man. Yet, I
wasn't late for the flight...they didn't have to hold the plane for me. The
discrimination came about because I booked closer to the date of departure
than what that other guy did. And booking closer to the date of departure
is a punishable offense! You get dinged full price instead of half price.
Oh well...what can you do? ;-)
Anyways, there is such a thing as positive discrimination and negative
discrimination. The positive discrimination encourages participation in the
marketplace, while the negative discrimination would discourage
participation. Imo, *anything* that would allow a greater number of people
to participate in the market place is a good thing. If it means offering
deals to some, but not to others, so be it!
The guys paying full price at the bar are not leaving the bar in huge
numbers when the ladies are there paying only half-price. If the men would
choose to leave and that exodus would result in the bar owner losing too
much money, those discounts to the ladies would be stopped. We don't see
this happening because when it's Ladies' Night the guys tend to buy the
drinks for the girls they have their designs on. This means that buying
drinks for a gal is cheaper for the men than it would be at any other night
of the week.
But let's consider "proportional" contributions. On average the women earn
65 cents for every dollar a man earns. Her spending power is considerably
less. One could argue that instead of giving the gals 50% off what the men
pay, that perhaps the price reduction should be capped to 35%. To me that
seems fair. Would that be acceptable to you, John?
