third of hospitals will have to close beds, sack staff or cut non-urgent treatment in the coming year, according to a British
Medical Association survey.
The poll revealed that three quarters of health trust directors admit to funding problems.
Predicted shortfalls range from £200,000 to £25 million.
Almost 38% said that their trust was intending to reduce services.
This included measures such as closing beds and wards, staff redundancies, freezing recruitment, reducing elective services and
cutting staff development and training opportunities.
The BMA first raised concerns about funding shortfalls in the NHS in a letter to Health Secretary Patrician Hewitt in August.
But the organisation said that the reply they received from Health Minister Lord Warner showed that the Government was still in
denial about the problem.
At the end of the last financial year many trusts found they had hefty deficits, some running into millions of pounds.
Dr Paul Miller, chairman of the BMA's consultants' committee, said: "Something is going terribly wrong when patients pay the price
for these financial problems and the Government's lack of joined-up thinking."
The figures were revealed in the interim results of a survey sent to 530 medical directors across England.
