This was also true of Bradley, Grant, Sherman and Sheriadan.

I did not mean to denegrate the rank of Field Marshal in the Royal
Army, just to show that Bay Man's insistence that Patton was of lesser
rank than Montgomery was meaningless. The two were in different
armies that awarded 5-star rank in different ways and for different
reasons. Before {if we include the post civil war promotions} and
after WWII, General of the Army was a rank that was given as a reward
for past service. Only during WWII and mostly to give equal status to
British officers and then only sparingly, were actively serving US
officers promoted to General of the Army {or Admiral of the Fleet.}

The US Army was very stingy with promotions even in war time. Patton
was only promoted to a regular army 2-star in August of 1944 almost
three and a half years after he had been promoted in the more
temporary "Army of the United States". I don't know, but perhaps you
can tell us if there was a similar difference between regular army and
temporary rank in the Royal Army.
