If, as you seem to be doing, we go by the manufacturers' marketing
brochures then the B-17 had a computing bomb sight that could drop
bombs from an altitude of 5-6km right into a pickle barrel and the
Allies had various AA systems that guaranteed destruction of any plane
foolish enough to fly within a few miles' range. So there.

Picket ships are in range of medium range land based aircraft.

Picket ships would of course be deployed off the North American coast,
and the attackers don't have the fuel for creative routing anyway.
