The Allied U-Boat response did not curtail greatly other endeavours.
In the fall of 1942, the USN landing ship and craft programs were
reduced in order to increase and speed up the DE program.
Cancellations included 85 LST [9/16/42] & 48 LCIL [late 1942]. If
these ships and craft had been available in the spring of 1944, D-Day
could have been both larger and earlier.
