Japan, US, Russians

This is a continuation of the previous thread.

First of all, are all of you communicating on the thread Americans
(and/or British)?

I have a few questions:

1. Why was it necessary for the US to INVADE the Japanese mainland?
What was wrong with just sorrounding them, and forcing them to
surrender through sanctions and destruction of military forces from
air?

1a. How long do you think that the "will" to fight to the bitter
end would survive then.
1b. How much damage could the sorrounded Japan do to anyone?
1c. How much Japanese troops were still active in China and elsewhere on
on Asian mailand? And how much potential did they have for
furhter survival againt Russian, Chinese, British and American
combined efforts?

2. What would you say about the Russian role in brining the Japanese
down at the end of the war?
Was there a same kind of a competition over Japan as over Germany?
(how will enter first, race for Berlin)
Could it be that since Russian scored the mortal struck over Germans,
that the US desperately wanted to be the winner of the Pacific war?
(even though the D-Day and further operations were mainly
successful, the main strugle was on the East)
(additionaly, how much do the bombs have to do with simple REVENGER
over Pearl Harbour)
(keep in mind that the attack could have been prevented, or minimized
if the intelligence gathered was taken seriously, but this really
is of no importance for the discussion, what is important is that
Japanese gave no warning, so perhaps the US decided to give no
warning as well regarding the nuclear power).

3. Where else could have the US tested their weapons over live
targets? (a bomb) To see how it REALLY works (because nobody really
knew what it would do, depsite the tests in the desert).

4. If there was a true interest in protecting the Chinese people,
where were the US and the rest of the Western Powers when China
was asking for help from the League of Nations (protection against
the Japan)?

I rembember reading (I will remember the source) that the Russian
armies pretty much gave the final death punch to the Japanese
might before the bombs were dropped. Somebody here mentioned a
number of 670.000 Japanese soldiers surrendering to the Russians.
