Combat roles for blacks were limited in World War Two but did exist. See, for instance, the 92d Infantry Division in Italy, the 93d Infantry Division in the Pacific, the 761st and 784th Tank Battalions, etc. There was also the infantry replacement program in 1945.
The Army even published a handy book discussing this: _The Employment of Negro Troops_ as part of the US Army official history.
