Re: Invasion of Okinawa, Iwo Jima instead of Philipines

To be fair, one out to point out that 15 years after WW I Hitler came
to power. 15 years after WW II they (at least the Federal Republic)
were poised to become the economic "wonderkind" to Europe and (along
with Japan) of the world.

The German 'economic miracle' has been the subject of some swingeing
re-appraisal in more recent times, along with the UK's supposed doldrums.
Reading some recent economic history is much recommended.

In pointing out that the US did well out of
the Marshall Plan do remember to point out that it also did some good.
Besides, "doing well out of doing good" is an old American tradition.

If you had a drug which would make a sick patient feel temporarily well
while doing irreparable long-term harm, and another drug which would make
the patient a trifle less better initially but also effect a long-term cure,
what would you think of the doctor who prescribed the former because it
would make him richer than prescribing the second? And, particularly, if the
doctor then went on to cry incessantly about his marvellous philanthropy and
greatheartedness in prescribing the first drug?

No doubt the friends of the doctor would laud his keen witted attention to
his own interest, while the relatives of the patient might regard him as a
greedy hypocrite.
