Have no idea if they ever identified him or his unit. Look at the
2:31 mark of clip. You can see the 3 to 4 guys on the beach. The one
in the left hand corner of screen drops. It doesn't even look like
they were running that hard. When you're under fire, i would expect
them to be running much faster. Pretty strange.
Stepping off a landing craft or stepping out of a parachute is one of
the most confusing things a soldier has to confront. Rommel knew that.
Add the rocky voyage across the channel, climbing down the cargo nets
into an LCVP, and the large amount of gear, the soldiers in the
footage are going about as fast as they can.
Much of the raw movie film shot on Omaha was placed into a duffle bag
and transported back to a ship by a major (IIRC). On hauling the bag
up from the LCVP in the heavy seas, it was lost overboard.
There is another film clip often (always?) used in documentaries shot
from the stern of an LCVP just after the ramp drops and men are wading
through the surf. If you look carefuly you can see a burst of machine
gun fire rack across the ramp area, apparently from the right, very
Hollywood-like. The speed at which the rounds strike will give you an
idea of the MG42 rate of fire.
I have never heard of any German footage of the Omaha landing. It
would be quite a find if it exists.
