Was the B-29 strictly necessary for the delivery of the two A-bombs? Wouldn't a modified version of an Allied mass-produced WW2 bomber do instead?
The B-29 was the only aircraft in service at the time that had the range to fly the missions from bases in the Marshall Islands.
Though I suppose with Okinawa securely in Allied hands other bombers might have been able to manage the 10,000 lb. payload over the shorter distances from there to the targets.
