In my small way, I have a long sense of history too. Your post is
most interesting. A continental land power in the center of Europe
must be feared? Who says so?
Its neighbors.
When was this policy born?
It's not a policy, it's a reality.
Long before
1933? In the mid-19th century or earlier? Who was interested in a
fractured Germany? And why should there be a powerful (global)
British Empire but not a much more modest Germany?
British empire was much more preferable than any (not just Germany) EuropeanFrom the point of view of European smaller nations, a powerful global
land empire, for very obvious reasons. Britain, when on a conquest spree,
would send its troops out on ships and thus leave Europe largely unmolested.
Spain, France, Germany and Austria would send their troops marching out on
land more than, or rather than, or instead of sailing by sea (this statement
applies increasingly as you read through that list, up from Spain that not
only conquered lands in Europe but also an overseas empire).
Of course the perspective changes if you see it from the POV of a Maori
chieftain or an Indian rajah. But as long as we're talking about European
countries, a European continental superpower is always worse than a
super-powerful British Empire.
If, additionally, that superpower is Germany, and Nazi Germany to boot, I
think the facts show better than any discussion what the point was.
Many people have
learned the art of seeing the world through Anglo-American eyes, but
most Anglo-Americans seem to be unable to view it through anything
but their own. This may cause, increasingly, difficulties with those
billions of people who experienced history differently.
Say, aren't you approaching escape velocity in this off-topic launch of
yours?
