I presume you're talking about civilians.
Many Japanese committed suicide on Saipan and Okinawa.
Some Japanese committed suicide out of a combination of brainwashing and fear.
Others were bullied into it by the Japanese military. This happened during the
Okinawa campaign. The Japanese soldiers who forced the Okinawans to murder
their relatives and commit suicide then SURRENDERED.

Actually, most of the more brutal and stupid Japanese military practices were of
relatively recent formulation.
