I think the ship in question may be the St. Roch, a small boat
operated
by the RCMP (Royal Canadian Mounted Police). It made a wartime voyage
from Vancouver to Greenland. The voyage was the first ever complete
west-to-east trip through the Northwest Passage.
I saw the same (or similar?) documentary on History Television here in
Canada a few years back. I don't recall the name of the documentary
but
you might be able to track it down via the folks at History
Television.
Here's the URL for their "contact us" page:
http://www.historytelevision.ca/help/faqs.asp#contactus
If you look at the first question in the FAQ it appears that they are
trying to deter the sort of question you are asking. But since this
was
a Canadian ship and it is a Canadian channel, there may well be a
chance
that they make the effort to identify the program for you out of
national pride, if nothing else. For what it's worth, I think the
program may have been part of their "Turning Points of History"
series,
which may narrow it down enough for them to track it down for you.
An even better resource to try would probably be the National Film
Board
(NFB) of Canada. I just went to their site, http://www.nfb.ca, clicked
on "Welcome/HTML Version", then clicked on "Finding a film". I entered
St. Roch in the search box and clicked the 'Search' button. I got 6
hits, the first and last of which are false matches. However, the
middle
four films, Henry Larsen; Henry Larsen's Northwest Passages; In
Celebration of Nunavut - Charting the North - Volume 3; and Mission:
Northwest Passage are all about the St. Roch and her captain, Henry
Larsen. In fact the last of those four films, Mission: Northwest
Passage, is very likely the documentary we saw. Click on the link and
you will probably get major deja vu as you read the detailed
description.
I don't see an "Order Information" button for that film but there may
be
some way to borrow or rent it if you look around the NFB site.
I'll leave the rest in your hands. After all, it may not actually be
the
correct documentary - or ship!
