Patton's Seventh Army "maneuver" across Western Sicily was a swashbuckler's
cakewalk. It tested the troops' stamina (by the famous Truscott trot) rather
than the commander's ability. Against stiff opposition it could never have
worked the way it did.

It depends. It's a matter of viewpoints, and for instance, the Yugoslavs'
viewpoint on this is notoriously different. In the Italian concentration
camp on Rab island, perhaps one fifth of the nearly 10,000 deported
Croatians and Slovenians (civilians, not military) died from starvation and
horrible living conditions. About 1,700 Slovenian civilians out of a total
population of 340,000 were shot or hanged, and the figure doesn't include
the executed partisans. And Slovenia was treated with kid gloves in
comparison with Croatia and Montenegro.
