Who Killed More People, Pinochet or Allende?

I got into a political discussion last night about Chile, which led to
a discussion about Pinochet and Allende's reigns. One of my friends
maintains that Allende tortured and killed more people than Pinochet. I
think he's wrong but I couldn't challenge him with any facts.
I know that it's generally accepted that Pinochet killed around 3,000
people during and after the coup, but I couldn't find any credible
info on the Net concerning the total estimated killings that occurred
during Allende's nearly three year term, 1970 - 1973.
Would appreciate receiving some official and credible source citation.
Thanks! disprove
