I've never heard this idea before but there is some logic to it.
About as much "logic" as the French Language completely wiping out Breton in Bretagne, Catalan in Pyrenées Orientales, German in Lorraine, Basque in Gascony
Or English wiping out Welsh, Erse and Gaelic.
