This is an amazing statement, reeking a bit of racism (which is the
undercurrent of culture in the UK)
Ah 'it's racism', the cry of the defeated...
Well, William, it does come over as a bit racist, which is amazing,
coming from you, with your history.
How on earth can a statement of fact about book sales be racist? It's a statement of opinion, rather than fact. And your opinion is that
people who buy history books don't care about Eastern Europe, which
implies they have a prejudice against Eastern Europe or that Eastern
Europe is too insignificant to bother about.
No. Most people who buy medieval history books in English do NOT
buy books about Eastern Europe. Certainly they don't care too
much about it or there would be more books written on the subject.
I do believe that's all William said.
Actually, not. See his comment on my post about the books in
Swampscott library and his reply to Mary. Single statement can be
easily misunderstood but not the repeated pattern (and not that this
is limited to this thread). This is not, of course, a racism but his
attitude is very offensive and I'm surprised that you are trying to
justify it.
As Swampscott only has a population of 14,600 (although an extremely
affluent
Not 'extremely' and many not affluent at all.
and overwhelmingly white one) the book collection of its
library is always going to be unrepresentative.
Wrong.
So the large number of
books on Russia will always be a bit of a mystery
On a contrary, it is quite easy to understand but browsing
Swampscott's website does not provide you a crucial piece of
information for making an informed conclusion.
