In 1937 Percy Schramm wrote that there was a pressing need for a
revised edition of L.G. Wickham Legg's "English Coronation Records"
(1901) expanded to include all relevant ordines. Over 70 years of
silence have followed (as well as another coronation.) Does anyone
know if anyone anywhere is working on such a volume?
I think I have seen most of what Jinty Nelson has written on the
subject (including a statement that she *isn't* working on an edition
of the coronation ordines...) and I am familiar with Richard Jackson's
edition of the French ordines - he mentions the earliest English ones
(he can hardly avoid them) and the Judith ordo, but that is really
about it. George Garnett seems to have written the odd article, but
nothing more on the ordines themselves. Am I missing anything?
Since writing the above, I have looked at Sir Roy Strong's
semi-popular work "Coronation: A history of kingship and the British
monarchy" (2005), where Schramm's complaint is repeated! (I describe
Strong's book as "semi-popular" because although it has a scholarly
apparatus, and a formidable bibliography, it is written in popular
style, and is remarkably superficial - it is somewhat disconcerting to
read a book in order to learn more, only to find that you understand
some aspects better than the author does!)
I haven't heard of anyone working on such a project. That doesn't mean a
lot: I don't hear about everything, but I do hear about a lot of stuff.
That's a shame. I understand that John Brückmann was intending to produce an edition of the coronation ordines of medieval England - but he died in 1983.
