Give the current iteration of Ubuntu a try.

Oh, I am reasonably sure that the current stuff is better
fleshed out and relatively little hassle in administration.
But I have no need for it, with my nice Unix boxen (courtesy
of Apple) and mostly agreeable software (some of it common
to the overall Unix/Linux community, such as LAME). Out of the box, Mac OSX has all the compilers, scripting languages
(I prefer Tcl but have perl and python, various classic
UNIX shells, Java, etc.) and open source software I am
likely to use. When I was still afflicted with Windows
machines for work, I would have a Linux distribution on
the box to relieve the agony, and I have now some very
rare cases where I need to run Windows apps, so I have XP
available on my MacBook.

You can use Crossover Office for Mac to deal with most of those rare cases, unless you are doing consulting work that requires access to an actual Win OS.

I use Crossover Office for Linux, and as soon as I get my Mac box up will be using Crossover Office for Mac. Unfortunately, even though I have managed to get VBA to run cleanly on my [Debian] Linux system, I still have to have Win boxes (2000 and XP) for when I step clients through a given application. *sigh*

I have been using Linux for years on my personal system and love it. But this is one of the things I love about Linux/Unix/BSD. Quite often something that runs in one will run in all, with little or no adjustment.
