I love this book. Not that I'm any kind of authority on historiography
but I really enjoy the way he examines evidence in such detail - it's
like he wrote 10 monographs and combined them into one book. This and
McCormick's book on the Early Medieval Economy (actually Early
Medieval Trade) have become two of my favorites for that reason.
