A new hope for mankind.

New hope indeed. This interesting piece of
research suggests a solution to another of
the world's intractable problems:
Too many oocytes.
Inoculating women against pregnancy would
solve population pressures, oil prices,
"global warming" and religious ratbaggery.
Along with cancer, pregnancy has a
persistence to outlive all other diseases,
and now at last there is hope.

Cancer beaten by dose of own cells

A MAN with advanced skin cancer has recovered
fully after being given billions of his own
immune cells in a world-first treatment.
The 52-year-old was suffering from melanoma
that had spread to his lymph nodes and a
lung, but his tumours disappeared within
eight weeks of receiving the injection. He
was still in total remission two years later,
his American doctors reported in the New
England Journal of Medicine.
Experts have hailed the study as an exciting
development, but cautioned that bigger trials
were needed to prove it was not a chance
occurrence.
The director of the Sydney Melanoma Unit,
John Thompson, said a positive response in
one patient from the immunotherapy was
encouraging. "But ... it will require a lot
more work to see if it is reproducible."
He said melanoma spontaneously improved in a
small number of patients who could sometimes
go into remission. "That's why we have to
have randomised controlled clinical trials to
reach a conclusion."
American researchers led by Cassian Yee of
the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Centre
collected a type of white blood cell, known
as CD4 T-cells, from the patient and
separated those that targeted the melanoma
cells. These were grown in the laboratory and
more than 5 billion were injected into the
man, stimulating other T-cells, known as CD8,
to fight the tumours.
"We were surprised by the anti-tumour effect
of these CD4 T-cells and its duration of
response," Dr Yee said. "For this patient we
were successful, but we would need to confirm
the effectiveness of the therapy in a larger
study." He said about 25 per cent of people
with late-stage melanoma had the same type of
immune system and tumour cells as the man,
and it was hoped the therapy would also be
applicable to them.
