Very good!

Getting back on topic has Zimbabwe for example lost science and
knowledge or just not using it?

I'd say lost. I think I have heard of over 3 million refugees as of
some time last year.. This must have devestated the intellectual
capital of the country. Well-educated people are likely to have
options outside the country. Besides, given the financial crisis it
is hard to see how anyone inside the country would be able to maintain
any level of scientific literary let alone do any reasearch or decent
teaching.

Would not the same model occur in Western Europe during the start of
the dark ages?

I don't think so. Zimbabwe has lost perhaps 25% of its population in
5-6 years. It is also likely a matter of the best qualified people
getting out fast and nobody being stupid enough to move in.

Even if there as abrupt and massive dislocations of populations we
should be able to postulate that in the early Middle Ages people were
willing to move in. Perhaps not people with the same skill sets but
still somebody who knew something.
