I would like to read a book about technological progress in Europe
during the middle ages. Basically I am interested in knowing whether
or not the middle ages were dark. So far I have read water mills,
ploughs, cannons, mules, and the invention of cheese, but I would like
to read single book that could give a slightly grander perspective.
How did the tools and goods available to an average Frankish farmer in
year 800 differ from the tools and goods available to his descendants
in 1500? What about the technology or goods available to a nobleman,
monk or city-based artisan?
To which extent was progress gradual and to which extent did it
involve new inventions? Which of these inventions were made in Europe
and which were imported? Was technological progress in medieval Europe
slower than technological progress in Roman times?
Can anybody recommend a good book?
Thanks in advance

Not all great but others will tell you which are and which aren't and
recommend others just because I posted these.
China try Robert Temple , "The Genius of China: 3000 Years of Science,
Discovery and Invention" the short version of Needham.
