The British/Canadians successfully defended Canada, sent the American
forces packing, and burned Washington.

Careful. I know at least one American who doesn't like to be reminded of
that ...%)

They burned York (Toronto) first, so that makes it ok :) Besides, we
generally stuck to burning public buildings. They only put up a token
defence anyway: Dolly Madison holding the White House. That's no way to
run a war.

Legend has it that Dolly could weild a fearsome frying pan.

Could be that the Brits were faced with one of those frying pan / fire
decisions, and took the easy way out .
