"I was for years a member of the Skeptical Society.....
They debunked crop circles, the Bermuda Triangle,
the Roswell incident etc.....
so now, when anyone even says anything about these
subjects I know to 'plonk' them."

Only ysterday I came across this for the first time,
http://images.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=http://dudeman.net/siriusly/cc/mowingdevil1678.jpg&imgrefurl=http://dudeman.net/siriusly/cc/phenom.shtml&h=540&w=370&sz=65&hl=en&start=1&tbnid=6zmYGZgB9HUcVM:&tbnh=132&tbnw=90&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dmowing%2Bdevil%26svnum%3D10%26hl%3Den%26lr%3D%26sa%3DN
A 1678 pamphlet "The Mowing Devil" with a delightful
little devil in the woodcut on the cover producing a crop circle.

"Being the true relation of a farmer,
who bargaining with a poor mower,
about the cutting down three half acres of oats;
upon the mower asking too much, the farmer swore,
that the devil should mow it rather than he
and so it fell out that very night."

In my area we still call a little mini whirlwind that
flattens the crops a 'dust devil'

We carefully preserve our traditional stories and myths
so why not also value this class of legend.
Looking forward to my first known place in a killfile.

Great! That is at least three plonks worth.
I immediately posted the picture elsewhere.
Thanks.
