Hezbollah Crack Israeli Tanks Like Walnuts

Yes, folks. Reportedly, one in five of Hezbollah hits on Merkava tanks
damages or destroys the tank.

What we see here is failures at various levels, Grand Strategy,
strategy, and tactical.

Over-reliance on war technology against a well-trained guerrilla force
is teaching both Israel and the U.S. a tough lesson.

We have overestimated the value of technology in war, and our massive
investment on war-game weaponry bought us a sense of security that is
being shattered. It started with 9/11 and now we see how a handful of
tough guerrillas can stand up to one of the best armies in the world
equipped with the latest technology.

It is clear that no computer program can defeat an adequately armed
enemy with years of experience in battle against a superior regular
army.

Hezbollah is emulating the tactics of one of their greatest ancestors
who led Carthaginian armies against the superpower of his age and its
allies, masterfully using ruse, subterfuge, and Punic Faith.

While that Semitic general could not defeat Rome, and Hezbollah can't
defeat the United States, the measure of success is not the same for
the U.S./Israel and Hezbollah.

Their resiliance against a nuclear power is inspiring the Muslim world,
and each day they lob their rockets into Israel despite the IDF's best
efforts is a victory that emboldens Israel's enemies and draws new
recruits.

If one balances that against any sense of victory Israel is getting by
destroying Lebanon's bridges, buildings and people driving in cars, the
strategic error becomes evident.

Failures in Grand Strategy go to the goal of Zionism. An originally
well-meant enterprise to provide a national home to people thoroughly
deserving one, but implemented by the worst possible means as
proclaimed unshamedly by one of its most dedicated leaders:

"When we say that the Arabs are the aggressors and we defend ourselves
-- that is only half
the truth. As regards our security and life we defend ourselves... But
the fighting is only one aspect of the conflict, which is in its
essence a political one. And politically we are the aggressors and
they defend themselves."

-- David Ben-Gurion. Speech to the political Commitee of Mapain
1938.
