I can't honestly see an Anglo-Saxon noble giving it to the poor or the
church.
Why not? Where do you think the A-S church got its money? Certainly not 2/3 of that collected, but I'd bet most such nobles gave a sizeable chunk. I have a book on this somewhere I'll try and find.
