In Anglo-Saxon England, earls collected fines and taxes and in return
received a "third penny", 1/3 of the money they collected. Where did
the other 2/3 go?
'To the king' is probably a good bet...
To the king's personal wealth? Or for the king to distribute for the
well-being of his country?
