History is usualy seen as based on written sources,

For me archaeology is a way to write history, as an
addition to and expansion of the written sources, and
therefore part of history.
What would we know about viking ships and weapons
and what about the anglo-saxon invasions without
archaeology?
Precisely. I have always regarded archaeology as part of the art of
recovering lost knowledge/information and that it relies on artifacts
does not separate it from history.
Here in Scandinavia archaeology and anthropology many times are
considered to be a help-disciplins for History as well as written
sources are used by archaeologists to help them understand what they
have found.
Yes, as far as 'historic' periods are concerend,
you can regard archaeology as auxiliary.
But before that, archaeology is the only
means to describe our past.
