Picking up injured birds then had other dangers.
I rescued a jackdaw and it showed its gratitude
by becoming one of the family. It shared our meals,

outdoor home much prefered to roost in the wardrobe.
Clumsy birds jackdaws, particularly when landing
on your head. Smelly too, very smelly and not too
fond of being bathed.

Do they have fleas? :-)

No, but sometimes mites, lice, louseflies or ticks.

Hej,

This makes me think that the insects in the birds' feathers
might be to the bird's flu like the fleas were to the Black Plague.
Is this what you mean, Simon?
We have been warned here to keep away from dead birds,
and report to the authorities if we see anything alarming. If
the insects have some infectious significance, then it might also
be wise to keep a certain distance.

There seems to be a relation between louseflies
and avian malaria, and there are suspicions re
the West nile virus.
