Haflingers are compact Alpine horses (typically 14 hands or so,
and larger than the Icelandic horse), reportedly developed as a
breed by the Venetii nearly 3 millennia ago.
Nearly ....
1874, Vinschgau, Hafling (near Meran). Southern Tyrol, Austria.
Josef Folie was the breeder.

(nice pictures of the horsies)

My German is not up to this anymore, but I gather Herr Folie created
the "modern Haflinger" breed. Some version of the horse existed prior,
but I suspect that a breed standard was adopted as a result of his
understandable desire to show off the horses he bred.

The Austrian Army kept them for their mountain troops until
recently, AIUI.

Cough....
Those were cars; called "Haflinger" because they could climb nearly
anywhere.
When they are auctioned off by the army, the farmers bid high for
them;
they beat a tractor any day of the week.

I know the vehicles, but not well, and the Pinzgauer. I made the
acquaintance of Austrian medics in UNTSO in '92 and '93. They used to
visit us in Beirut to test the water in our HQ and vaccinate our
watchdog. They told me they had been trained on veterinary procedures
so they could also tend to the horses used in the mountains. One of
the UN field service officers was a former mountain troopie and had
occasionally worked with the horses back in the early '80s.

BTW, we use Percherons -- built by Steyr.
