Chemical theory (or whatever) sounds really, really boring. If I

I know how that division of interest stuff works, though. When I
wanted
to get a ham radio license, I boned up on the theory, which I found
interesting and relatively easy to deal with. My hands-on technical
capacity, however, never surpassed being able to solder a coax
connector
to a piece of coax.

This is only one example of my interest/possible expertise in
theory
outweighing my practical ability in the same line. If I were a
chemist I
would be a theorist, too, I'm quite sure.

And I'm sure it would work. I can solder a coax connector
to a bit of coax too. At least I could. Do they still use
that stuff?

Yes (that's how my computer is connected to the net -- 75 Ohm coaxial
cable through a Terayon modem) but they no longer solder the
connections.
