The same thing is probably true for most cases of ancestor worship. Having a
geneaolgy that fits, does not necessarily mean it is true. If people want to
feel related to some newcomer, anything will do to accept him. So both sides
incorporate their ancestors.

Regular smaller donations (for general living), exceptional bigger grants
(for bigger projects), and your family would always have some influence. And
being influential would make you more inclined to keep donating.
The exchange of gifts is a time honoured technic of improving relationships;
the giving of gifts without a return-gift leads to obligations or even
domination. Have a look at Marcel Mauss, The gift, (Essaie sur le don 1912?)
there is always new editions around.
