The explanation I've read is that it's got something to do with testosterone
and glands and whatnot. Something along the lines that if the castration is
done in the early teens, the body will continue to send the growth-signal
that would otherwise stop in the late teens. There's a book called
"Mutants", which was also done as a series of documentaries on Discovery,
and that's where I read this particular speculation. If you're interested
you should turn to the book because I'm no biologist and didn't understand a
lot of it. The author draws parallels between giant castrati and the genetic
mutation that causes pituitary giants.
