What little I know of this agrees with what Celia is
saying. Medieval art was filled with what I shall call
"visual cliches" (not meant to be a put-down) that have
little or no meaning to us.
There were all sorts of "standard images" that meant something
to their viewers. We have this today with images -- and no
medieval would understand them. Consider a picture of a
teen-ager in his or her messy room talking on the telephone.
That conjures up for us a whole story to go with the picture.
