normal to be worth much.
In my opinion, you are a great scholar, I commend you on your
excellent command of english language and agree with most of
your views, keep up good work.
Thanks. I don't ask - or expect - anyone to agree with all my views,
and I've demonstrated many a time that a convincing counter-case will
persuade me to change my views. (Indeed, I highly value those who
differ with me and can explain in a reasonable manner on what basis,
as it's impossible to learn from those who think the same.) However,
the occasional compliment never goes amiss. :)
If I sometimes get nasty, it is because there are people who take the
line that they already know everything there is to know (Aggy is a
"good" example). Such people automatically reject the views of those
who differ. As such, it is impossible for them to ever learn, and
because they do not learn, they take that as evidence that they must
indeed already know everything there is to know. Since, of course,
they know everything there is to know, if they take a particular
attitude towards another, they cannot possibly be wrong in that
attitude. How can they be wrong, if they know everything? It is also
quite impossible for such people to misinterpret a post, as
misinterpreting requires that they don't know what was in the mind of
the other person. If they know everything, then it must always be the
poster who is wrong, if there is any disagreement. To me, such a view
is the only view that can possibly ever be 100% wrong. Every other
view espoused, whether I like it or not, whether anyone else likes it
or not, is going to have some foundation.
In the extreme case of schizophrenics, their view of the world is
completely correct within the framework of what they think their
senses tell them. In fact, the late Scottish researcher R. D. Laing
had considerable success in curing schizophrenia by doing nothing more
than teaching those afflicted how to translate their framework into
one that the rest of the world could comprehend. A simple mapping
exercise, and a view that can clearly be seen as totally insane is
shown to be logically no different from a view that is objectively
real - which is one reason a lot of researchers in the field of the
mind have given up on "objective reality" and talk only of "subjective
reality" and "consentual reality", since it becomes impossible to say
for certain whose view is the one that is objective and whose is the
one that is mapped.
When it comes to archaeology, where so little survives and so much
interpretation is really just the consensus of the moment and not some
objective fact, things get much harder, particularly when national
pride or racial pride is involved. National pride can be a useful
thing to leverage - a proud people can usually be trusted to have oral
traditions and customs that are largely intact and uncorrupt from
antiquity, making it an excellent repository of information - but it
can't be trusted to interpret that information correctly. (For the
same reason, never ask a salesman if you should buy something. If
they're lousy, their data can't be trusted and if they're good, their
opinion certainly can't be trusted.) When dealing with the Baltic
region or the Middle East, it's many thousands of times worse.
Politics and religion dictate what is permissible to accept, and you
can be certain that's not going to include anything the politicians or
religious leaders find heretical. Hell will freeze over and the US
will hand over the Black Hills long before those hotheads will concede
as much as the time of day to those they see as mortal enemies. (Even
the atheists in the region are every bit as fanatical as the Spanish
Inquisition, and just as likely to burn you at the stake for holding
the "wrong" view.)
These references to the Inquisition are making me twitchy.
