The Eastern Roman Empire is a fascinating empire, since one can basically
argue that the Roman/Ancient world essentially died with it - and only
553

There are many interesting parallels with modern society.
A good place to start is with Wikipedia:

don't get that with the Encyclopedia Britannica, or something from an Oxford
professor's website. I would definitely invite anyone to tool around the
web for the "Byzantine Empire" (a misnomer from just a few centuries ago).
So far I haven't had a chance to do just that.
I wonder if anyone can confirm for me the interesting assertion I read that
the Eastern Romans once called themselves "Romanians", and the country of
the Eastern Roman Empire, "Romania".
