Can you be more specific?. Town gas, produced by the destructive
distillation of coal for heat and light was widely used in urban areas
in the 19 th century. By the early 20th century, light was being
produced more efficiently by electricity.

From ca 1950, coal as a source was replaced gradually either by natural
gas or gas distilled by cracking petroleum.
