None of the postings above seem to understand there
is a sharp difference between the Roman Republic and the
Roman Empire. The Roman Republic was strong enough
and rich enough to conquer Macedonia, Egypt, Punic
Carthage, Hispania, and Gaul. But it was the Empire that
captured Britain, Romania, Asia Minor and Palestine.
Only Herman the German (Arminius) was able to stop the
Empire from assimilating Germania.
The Senate was an hereditary body of aristocrats, landholders.
One did not slap a campaign poster up and "run" for the
Senate.
Kind of like the House of Lords in England.
Politics in Rome itself were a lot different from the politics of
the provincial cities and towns.
