Let's compare some research charges:
The New York Genealogical and Biographical Society: members-$20/hr;
non-members-$35/hr
http://tinyurl.com/ayorb
The Historical Society of Pennsylvania: members-$30 first hour, $25
each additional hour, non-members-$40 first hour, $30 each
additional hour

The New England Historic Genealogical Society: members-$45/hr;
non-members-$65/hr

Now is this significant price disparity because researchers at the
NYG&BS & the HSP are monkeys or tax cheats, or is it because the
NEHGS's charges are excessive?
