Coddington of Marston, Lincolnshire

Just a few random thoughts to finish up with this topic.

J.I. Coddington (? or Mr. Jacobus) published the following update to John Austin's _Genealogical Dictionary of Rhode Island_ in TAG, 20:185:

CODDINGTON, William (p. 276, 1st col.). Son of Robert Coddington [d. 1615] of Marston, co. Lincs., a prosperous yeoman, by his wife Margaret, who m. 2ndly Richard Wylles, and 3rdly, Richard Smyth. William son of Robert Coddington born about 1602-3 ("William Coddington, A Sketch," by Emily Coddington Williams, Boston, 1941). William of Newport had a seal marked "R. C.," doubtless his father's (Chapin's Doc. Hist. R.I. II, 23). Burgess of Boston, Lincs., 1625 ..."

It is known that the immigrant spent at least the second half of the 1620s at Boston, Lincolnshire, and immigrated from there to New England.

I've located a source demonstrating that this William Coddington, son of Robert Coddington of Marston, was certainly alive as late as 1628, when he received livery of Robert Coddington's lands dating back to 13th James II (1615) [see p. 93]:

The statement that Robert's widow Margaret remarried to Richard Wylles apparently comes from a late 1615 record in the Lincoln marriage licences:

http://books.google.com/books?id=otUKAAAAYAAJ&pg=PA49&lpg=PA49&dq=%22coddington+of+marston%22+bunworth&source=bl&ots=QxIsesiX-E&sig=J1qFjHoOGxEN9KHtE4TKagaKVv4&hl=en&sa=X&ei=_l8ZUJ_bHoGs9ASqxYD4BA&ved=0CDEQ6AEwAA#v=onepage&q=%22coddington%20of%20marston%22%20bunworth&f=false

Notice that William Bunworth, gent., applied for this marriage license. It is therefore interesting to notice that a Robert Coddington married a Margaret Bunworth on 3 May 1596 at Kirkby-on-Bain, county Lincoln, per IGI batch #M02960-1.

Marston, Lincs., records show baptisms of two children of Robert and Margaret (? Bunworth) Coddington (IGI batch C03015-2):

--William Coddington, son of Robert, bapt. 6 Jan. 1602
--Katherine Coddington, daughter of Robert, bapt. 2 July 1613

Many years ago, David King noted the Boston (Lincs.) marriage of a Catherine Coddington to an Isaac Foztree on 30 June 1629 (which definitely falls during the period William Coddington was known to have resided at the English Boston).

If Catherine was baptized at Marston a few days after her birth, late June 1629 would be around the exact time of her sixteenth birthday.

It appears that Isaac "Foztree" should really be Fortree/ Fortry/ Fortrie, or similar, and that Catherine's husband was a minister. Rev. Isaac Fortree was in the Netherlands in 1633, but back in England at Godalming, Surrey, by around 1645:

The Rev. Isaac Fortree died at Godalming, Surrey, in 1660 (see p. 284), and Mrs. Katherine Fortree died there in 1666 (see p. 294). Some of their children baptised in the years between 1646 and 1654 at Godalming were Mary, Isaac, Sarah, Katherine, and Jane. Jane was their last child, and was baptized at Godalming in 1654, when the Catherine Coddington born at Marston would have been aged about 41 years.

The Dutch influence might help explain William Coddington's growing religious tolerance once in New England (relations with Anne Hutchinson, removal out of the Bay Colony to "liberal" Rhode Island).
