Thomas Bulkley first recorded 1457 with responsibility managing king's prop
erties in the London Counties. In 1484 he was appointed Controller Sandwich
William his eldest son is mentioned 1475 working with his father.
Thomas's Will 1490 mentions two wives (1) Denise (2) Agnes Grey daughter
Sir Thomas Grey. Children William, John, Anthony, and a daughterThe Will
had curious instructions:
"Body to be carried from Sandwich in procession accompanied by Frairs,
four priests, a clerk, with children riding and singing by their side, and with
eight torches to light them when theypassed through a town. This was to
continue all the way to Canterbury, andfrom there to Bulkley's chosen place
of burial in Woolwich where they wereto be met by 16 poor men from
London bearing taspers and torches"
Just as well the year was 1490 rather than 1990 travelling about 70 miles.
There were other instructions that included ordering his eldest son to attend
Sunday church and pray for his father's soul!
Has anyone evidence of the ancestors of this carefully planned dep
arture. Possibly he was connected to the London Bulkleys (goldsmiths) or
the Chedle Cheshire line.
Thank you
Paul Bulkley
