Hello,
I was wondering whether someone here might know how I can calculate
the value of the old Scottish merk in today's Pound values.
Similarly, I am also needing to know the value of the Flemish Noble in
today's terms.
Is there a 'ready reckoner' available anywhere online?
Thanking you in anticipation
Rondo
Hi Rondo,
The National Archives website has a calculator for estimating how much
yesterday's (1270-1970) money is worth today.
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/currency/default0.asp#mid
The merk was in circulation at the end of the 16th century and in the
17th century and was valued at about one shilling in English coin
(Wikipedia). So for example, 100 merks in 1700 would be equivalent to
100 English shillings or 5 pounds. That five pounds would be worth
today - £390.45.
Regards,
John
