As far as I can determine, the ancestry of Elizabeth Metham who
married William Constable of Halsham  is as follows:

1. Thomas de Metham (ca. 1240 - ca. 1317) m. ?

1.1 John de Metham (ca. 1270 - < May 1312) m. Sybil Hamelton ( - May
1341)

1.1.1 Thomas de Metham (ca. 1300 - < 20 Apr 1355) m. ?

1.1.1.1 Thomas de Metham (ca. 1340 - 28 Aug 1403) m. Elizabeth
Stapleton

1.1.1.1.1. Alexander Metham (ca. 1382 - 9 Jun 1416) m. Elizabeth Darcy

1.1.1.1.2  Elizabeth Metham m. William Constable (1374 - ca. 1419)

I can't find any evidence of a Tempest or Salvin marriage.

All of these generations except for the last one (Elizabeth Metham m.
William Constable) appear in this form in Clay's edition of Dugdale's

In this source Sir Alexander Metham is said to have had a son Sir
Thomas and "several other children", none of whom are named.  The
basis for the Metham-Constable marriage seems to be from two sources:
1) the Constable pedigree in the same visitation (but different Google
reference) identifying the wife as Elizabeth, dau. of Sir Thomas [not

2) a note by the editor of "Testamenta Eborancensia" vol. 4 p. 351
attached to the will of Sir William Constable's father John,

The hypothesis that Elizabeth (Metham) Constable was a daughter of Sir
Alexander makes chronological sense, although it's also possible that
she was his brother and thus daughter of a Sir Thomas as Clay
indicates. In fact, the suggested birth date of Sir Alexander in
comparison to that of Sir William Constable would suggest this. Is
there any other support for this particular placement of Elizabeth as
a daughter, rather than sister, of Sir Alexander?

BTW, the death date for Sir William Constable (1419) seems to be based
on the fact that he is not mentioned in his mother's will of 1419
(also in the cited volume of Test. Ebor.) except as the father of her
grandson.  Seems reasonable....

I think that you may have misunderstood my post which showed Elizabeth
Metham as a daughter of Thomas Metham and Elizabeth Stapleton, not as
a daughter of Alexander Metham. I have no evidence to that she existed
beyond the Constable pedigree which you cite above.

You're quite right! I was reading the names in sequence as individual
generations and missed the fact that you had numbered Sir Alexander
and Elizabeth to be in the same generation. Mea culpa....
