Fw: Society Of Genealogists (London)

Dear Todd,

Correct me if I am wrong. The people you encountered there, were they employees or were they people who gave their time? That can explain why you had such a disappointing experience. I think they employ only a few people and the rest are volunteers.

With best wishes
Leo van de Pas,

Well, as long as we are discussing the SoG, I will share my not so
pleasant experience there. My memory is a little hazy on the precise
(decade-plus-old) details, but it went something like this. I went
looking for a manuscript containing a transcript of a will, the
original of which had been destroyed during WWII. I had seen a
specific reference to the manuscript being in the SoG collection.
After paying their rather hefty admission fee for a block of time, I
found the item in the catalogue and requested it, only to watch one
assistant ask another, who asked another, eventually coming back to
tell me, in oh so polite a manner, that no one knew where to find the
item in question. I then went to the catalogue and identified four
other manuscripts that would have proved helpful - I say would have,
because nobody knew where to look for them either. I'll admit that I
was after specific obscure items that the average librarian might not
encounter, but that doesn't excuse the fact that I blew all of the
time for which I had paid a good chunk of cash just waiting for them
to decide that they were completely clueless. This proved one of the
more costly (to me) cases of usurious incompetance I have
encountered. Needless to say, I am not a fan.
