I do not think it's quite fair to imply that American family historians go looking for royal or aristocratic ancestors. This particular mailing list is more geared-to-that simply because there is much more known about royal and aristocratic lines, than any other, in the medieval period.
Fair enough. My main experience of American genealogists is from this medieval genealogy newsgroup where there is more about immigrant (to US) and royal ancestors than there is about medieval ancestors.
