I'm not sure what "generally accepted" sources Mr. Higgins is using
which assigns "only two" daughters to John Stewart's first marriage to
Margaret Douglas.
Mr. Higgins' comments aside, it appears that John Stewart had at least
three daughters by his first wife, Margaret Douglas, namely Jean (wife
of Alexander Gordon, 3rd Earl of Huntly), Elizabeth (wife of Andrew
Gray, 2nd Lord Gray), and Christian (wife of Neil Stewart, of
Forthergill and Garth).
The evidence for Christian Stewart being a child of her father's first
wife, Margaret Douglas, is found in the book, Historic Memorials of
the Stewarts of Forthergill, by Charles Poyntz Stewart, published
1879, page 20, which refers to Christian's marriage contract dated 22
January 1477. This material may be viewed at the following weblink:

John Stewart's first wife, Margaret Douglas, was still alive 22 Jan.
1472/3. As such, she (and not Eleanor Sinclair) would surely be the
mother of Christian Stewart, who was contracted to marry within four
years of that date. We can be certain that Margaret Douglas was
Christian Stewart's mother for another reason, as elsewhere it
appears that Christian Stewart's husband, Neil Stewart, was himself an
adult in or before 1478.
