As for English kings being addressed as "sir Edward king of England,"
try this example in the Close Rolls, 1272-1279, pg. 565:

I trust this example addresses the point you wanted me to make.
Douglas,
The English in that source looks suspiciously modern to me, not
at all like the English that I have read from the period.
Consider this passage from your source:
"Alexander, king of Scotland, son of Alexander, late king of
Scotland, came to the king in his chamber at Westminster, and
there offered to become his liege man and to do homage
to him, and he did it in these words : ' I Alexander, king of
Scotland, become the liege man of Sir Edward, king of England,
against all men.' "
Here for comparison is an extract from a contemporary work,
Cursor Mundi:
Man yhernes rimes for to here,
And romans red on maneres sere,
Of Alisaunder þe conquerour;
Of Iuly Cesar þe emparour;
O Grece and Troy the strang strijf,
Þere many thosand lesis þere lijf.
Are you sure it's not a modern translation that you have cited?
