Mention of the Bowes family, allows me to throw a correction, because
many people are repeating the inaccuracy that Ralph Bowes (d 1512),
esq of Streatlam Castle was third son yet successor to his father
William Bowes (by Maud FitzHugh).
The evidence however is that Sir William Bowes of Streatlam, son of
another Sir William Bowes by Joan Greystoke; married Maud FitzHugh
daughter of William Lord FitzHugh by Margery Willoughby of the
Willoughby of Eresby family.
Their heir apparent was William Bowes who was NOT a knight, but only
an esq and who did attain to his father's estate sometime between 1468
and 1474, but held it only briefly.
This William Bowes, esq, married a wife named Isabella who survived
him. Burke makes her a "niece to Lawrence Booth, Bishop of
Durham" (and later Archbishop of York) but if so, I do not know
exactly how they connect. After William Bowes, esq died, shortly
after, Isabella remarried to Thomas Bryan, Knt and then Chief Justice
of the Common Pleas until his death in 1500.
*When* William Bowes, esq died, his second brother Robert had already
d.s.p. and his third brother Ralph Bowes, esq was held his heir in
Streatlam etc. This Ralph Bowes married Marjery Conyers dau of Sir
Richard. This Ralph assigned to his sister-in-law Isabella some lands
as her portion in 1474 when he attained the estates.
And so on.
The confusion arises since William Bowes, esq followed his father
William Bowes, Knt and only lived for a short while. That both
William and his brother Ralph were adults by 1474 curtails as well the
nonsense that Ralph was born in 1468.
